Its Derby weekend here in the Northwoods and that means cold weather. We have had lows in the -20 to -30 ranges the past few days, but that should all be behind us now. Today’s high is in the upper teens with lows in the single digits. This week looks like a perfect week for snowmobiling, highs in the mid 20s and lows in the teens with a chance of flurries and light snow. The cold weather has helped the trails get a good solid base. Come on up and get some ridding in.
Here are the reports on the local trails:
Three Lakes/Brule River
Trail Report: Three Lakes – Brule River
Reported By: Three Lakes – Brule River Trails
Date of Report: 01/20/2012
Trail Conditions: Good
Snow Cover: 9″ on the official Three Lakes gauge
Area Report: About 1″ of new snow for this week. Maybe more for Sunday and Monday. Warming back towards normal for the weekend. Not much new to report on trail conditions. With the solid icy base in most areas and the little bit of new snow, trails are still on the good side. Since we are relatively low on snow, continue to expect the mixed bag of conditions. Some fair, some good and some very good. Swamps are frozen tight with the cold this week. Roaded trails are good. Lakes are great and have some minor drifting, not a problem. Grooming is on a normal schedule. No excuses bundle up and get out and ride! Have fun and be safe!
** As always, when lake riding, stay close to the orange barrels to be sure you are riding the safest ice possible. **
Eagle River Sno-Eagles
TRAILS IN SNO-EAGLES COUNTRY THAT IS THE 100 MILES IN & AROUND EAGLE RIVER ARE IN GOOD RIDING CONDITION
It's a cold one this morning. 22 below when I got up at 6:15am. At 8:15am it is 18 below zero!!! 8 below tonight & 19 for a high on Saturday with a bit of SNOW in the forecast! Should expect this, this is the normal Snowmobile Derby weather!
Trail Boss Tom has the groomers going out every night. With the super cold the trails lay down very smoothly. Even with the sun out this morning it is just too cold to melt anything. Note that there is chop on Trail 10/13 also known as the Wisconsin River Bridge Trail. Use Trail 70W or head up on Trail 3 if you don't want to deal with the chop.
The Lake Trails, Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail are open & marked with orange reflective barrels. Please stay by them for safety. Do not go on any lake that is not marked as a trail.
If you are riding today make sure that all skin is covered. It doesn't take much to get frost bite. Layers of clothes work the best. Stop often & make sure you keep your sled full of gas.
As you ride you will see 6 inches brown signs along the trail & at intersections. Keep an eye on these. If you have problems call 911 & give them the 3 digit number. The Sheriff's Department can pin point where you are. Up here they can not always find you by your cell phone signal. Many times they have to work off the ping from the tower. This could take more time.
